Our electric version calls.

Thursday night was the annual Battle of the Bands at the Bijou. I had to cover it for newspaper, and it was pretty good. It’s certainly something I’d like to see happen every weekend, as Hays could use a forum for musicians to jam with each other. Unfortunately, I’m sure it won’t happen any time soon.

It was to be held outside at the football stadium, but rain forced it to be relocated. I had a new photographer, named Jessica, who came with me. Most of the acts played covers, with a very few trying some original songs of their own. The Bijou is a really neat place, complete with a bar and place to mingle. But the lighting for the stage was awful. It was seizure inducing, controlled via the sound coming into the mixer. Each time a thud, crash, chord or any sort of noise occurred, the lights would change color, intensity and direction. I guess it was pretty “extreme” looking, but it made it difficult to use natural light to photograph.

Either way, it was still fun. Photos here.

man from mars, man from mars, will you take us to the stars?

Mars has been extremely close to Earth as of late (or vice versa), and the observatory atop Albertson Hall was open on Wednesday so people could view Mars up close. This telescope is really darn neat, because it’s sitting in a dome right on top of the 4th floor in that building. It was built a long time ago, and it is showing it’s age. But that doesn’t really detract from the strangeness and coolness of the setup.

The thing that was more surprising was the amount of people that showed up. I’d been to previous Astronomy Club events before, and they usually had only a handful of people. But this one had well over 100 people. The line was reaching down the stairs, and it wasn’t just older folks. There were an incredible amount of attractive girls!

They should have had reception afterwards. Maybe including a D.J. Photos here.

P.S. Remember this game?

women, sun and freebies? not the beach.

Last Monday was the Back to School picnic in the Quad. It quite possibly is my favorite on-campus event the entire year, mainly because I like our Quad a lot. It’s a really nice area in the middle of most of the academic buildings, with well kept grass, a canopy of trees overhead, and paths that criss-cross the area.

For those who regularly attend this event, you know that it is a great place to get free goodies. Pretty much every club and organization on campus has a booth there, handing out free things. I covered it for the newspaper, getting some really cool photographs. I even found out that the caricature artists were from Boston and L.A.! Craziness.

Too bad the evening ended badly, with me getting only one hour of sleep. But we’ve all heard enough about that. Photos of the picnic and more.

marathon. i forgot to stretch.

I’ll go ahead and apologize to anyone who had to deal with me the last few days. It’s been less than fun. Monday night was production for the first issue of the school paper, complete with full color on the front and many more pages than usual. Needless to say, the two color photos on the front are both mine, along with another black and white elsewhere. However, this wasn’t without a price. Being online editor, I also had the increasingly complex task of redesigning the site. There are still some major issues to resolve, but I honestly need to step away from a computer for a while. I’ve been up since 8am Monday morning… with only 2 hours of sleep total, taken in small increments over two days. It is now 1:30am on Wednesday.

38 hours of consciousness. Barely.

Let’s celebrate…. with zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

one thousand words these pictures make…

sometimes things can only be seen.
see for yourself.
